About the Hawaiʻi Island Lava Zone Lookup

This free tool shows the USGS lava flow hazard zone for any address, town, landmark or GPS location on Hawaiʻi Island (the Big Island). Type a street address such as 58 Kinoole St, Hilo, search a place name like Pāhoa, Volcano, Kona or Waimea, use your device's location, or tap anywhere on the map.

The island is divided into nine lava zones, from Zone 1 (highest hazard, the summits and rift zones of Kīlauea and Mauna Loa) to Zone 9 (lowest hazard, Kohala). A property's lava zone can affect the availability and cost of homeowners insurance, and in Zones 1 and 2 it can make financing harder to get, so it's worth checking before you make an offer.

Zones come from the USGS lava-flow hazard zone map (1992, MF-2193), and boundaries are approximate. For help buying or selling on the Big Island, contact Dayna Robertson, REALTOR®-Broker, EXIT Realty Island Living, at 808-430-5383.
